The Second Sign of Isa
Recap: You already know that the Quran shows us that:
- Isa was born of a virgin
- Isa performed miracles
- Isa was not killed
- Isa was taken alive to Allah
- Isa will return on Judgement Day
No other prophet in Islam is described this way.
Now you also know:
- Isa can create
In the Injil, John’s Gospel records a series of carefully chosen signs. These are not simply miracles to amaze people. Each sign reveals something about who Isa is and invites the reader to respond.
The second sign takes place again in Cana of Galilee. A royal official travels desperately to find Isa because his son is dying. Instead of travelling to the boy, Isa simply speaks.
The boy is healed at that very moment — even though Isa never goes to him.
This raises an important question: what kind of authority does Isa have if his word alone can bring life from a distance?
Read the Scripture below:
John 4:46-54
Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.
And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
When this man heard that Isa had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Isa told him, “you will never believe.”
The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
“Go,” Isa replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Isa at his word and departed.
While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
Then the father realised that this was the exact time at which Isa had said to him, “Your son will live.”
So he and his whole household believed.
This was the second sign Isa performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
Observation first — What does the Scripture say?
Before drawing conclusions, we first carefully observe what the text actually says.
What is happening in the story?
- A royal official has a son who is dying in Capernaum.
- He travels to Cana to find Isa.
- He begs Isa to come and heal his son.
- Isa does not go with him.
- Instead, Isa simply says: “Your son will live.”
- The man believes Isa’s word and begins the journey home.
- On the way, servants meet him with news that the boy has recovered.
- The exact moment of healing matches the moment Isa spoke.
- The man and his whole household believe.
Important details to notice
- The father shows desperation and urgency.
- Isa heals without travelling to the sick child.
- The miracle happens purely by Isa’s spoken word.
- The father believes Isa before seeing the result.
- This event is called the second “sign.”
Interpretation second: — Is there something we can learn about Isa?
Now we ask: what might this sign reveal about Isa?
What does this sign reveal about Isa?
- His authority is not limited by distance.
- His spoken word has power over sickness and life.
- He calls people to trust his word even before they see the outcome.
- His authority reaches beyond physical presence.
Faith before seeing
The official asks Isa to come and heal the boy. But Isa does something unexpected — he speaks a command and sends the man home.
The father must decide whether to trust Isa’s word or not.
The text says: “The man took Isa at his word.”
Only later does he discover that the healing happened at the exact moment Isa spoke.
Implication last: What might this mean for you?
You have now read the Scripture and considered what this sign reveals about Isa.
Take a moment to reflect personally.
- What stands out to you in this story?
- Why do you think Isa healed the boy from a distance instead of travelling there?
- What does this story suggest about the authority of Isa’s word?
- Why might the father have believed Isa before seeing the result?
- If Isa truly has this kind of authority, what might that mean for you?
