The Fifth Sign of Isa

Recap: You already know that the Quran shows us that:

  • Isa was born of a virgin
  • Isa performed miracles
  • Isa was not killed
  • Isa was taken alive to Allah
  • Isa will return on Judgement Day

No other prophet in Islam is described this way.

Now you also know:

  • Isa can create
  • Isa’s word has authority over sickness and life
  • Isa can restore life and strength
  • Isa can provide food for a vast crowd

In the Injil, John records a series of signs that reveal who Isa is. Each sign invites the reader to look deeper and ask what these miracles are saying about his authority and identity.

Immediately after feeding the five thousand, the disciples travel across the Sea of Galilee in a boat.

A strong wind begins to blow and the water becomes rough. The disciples are struggling against the storm when something extraordinary happens.

Isa approaches them — walking on the water.

The disciples are frightened until Isa speaks to them.

What does it mean if Isa has authority not only over sickness and food, but even over the forces of nature?

Read the Scripture below:

John 6:16–21

When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,

where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum.

By now it was dark, and Isa had not yet joined them.

A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.

When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Isa approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.

But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”

Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

Observation first — What does the Scripture say?

Before drawing conclusions, we first carefully observe what the text actually says.

What is happening in the story?
  • The disciples leave by boat after the feeding miracle.
  • It becomes dark while they are on the water.
  • A strong wind creates rough waves.
  • The disciples struggle as they row across the lake.
  • They suddenly see Isa approaching the boat.
  • He is walking on the water.
  • The disciples are frightened.
  • Isa tells them not to be afraid.
  • When he enters the boat, they reach the shore.
Important details to notice
  • The disciples are several miles from land.
  • The lake is rough because of strong wind.
  • Isa approaches them while walking on the water.
  • The disciples are initially afraid.
  • Isa’s words calm their fear.
Interpretation second: — Is there something we can learn about Isa?

Now we ask: what might this sign reveal about Isa?

Authority over nature

Earlier signs showed Isa’s authority over sickness and physical need.

In this sign, Isa demonstrates authority over the natural world itself.

Walking on the water shows that the forces of nature are not beyond his control.

The words Isa speaks

When the disciples see Isa walking toward them, they are frightened.

Isa responds with simple but powerful words:

“It is I; don’t be afraid.”

These words reassure the disciples and reveal that the one approaching them is not a threat but their teacher.

A connection to the Bread of Life teaching

This sign takes place immediately after the feeding of the five thousand.

In the following part of the chapter, Isa explains that the feeding miracle was pointing to something deeper.

John 6:35

Then Isa declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Just as Isa provided bread for the crowd, he now reveals himself as the true source of life that Allah provides.

Implication last: What might this mean for you?

You have now read the Scripture and considered what this sign might reveal about Isa.

Take a moment to reflect personally.

  • What stands out to you in this story?
  • Why do you think the disciples were afraid?
  • What might walking on the water suggest about Isa’s authority?
  • Why do you think Isa first tells them not to be afraid?
  • If Isa truly has authority even over the forces of nature, what might that mean?

Continuing the Journey

This was the fifth sign recorded by John.
