The Fourth Sign of Isa
Recap: You already know that the Quran shows us that:
- Isa was born of a virgin
- Isa performed miracles
- Isa was not killed
- Isa was taken alive to Allah
- Isa will return on Judgement Day
No other prophet in Islam is described this way.
Now you also know:
- Isa can create
- Isa’s word has authority over sickness
- Isa can restore life and strength
In the Injil, John records a series of signs that reveal who Isa is. These signs are not random miracles. Each one points to something deeper about his authority and identity.
In this fourth sign, a large crowd follows Isa into a remote place. As the day passes, the people become hungry.
A boy has only a small meal — five loaves of bread and two fish.
Isa gives thanks and begins distributing the food.
Astonishingly, the food does not run out. The entire crowd eats until they are satisfied.
But John uses this miracle to raise a deeper question:
Is Isa simply feeding temporary hunger, or is he pointing to something much greater?
Read the Scripture below:
John 6:5-13
When Isa looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.
“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
Isa said, “Have the people sit down.”
There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
Isa then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
Observation first — What does the Scripture say?
Before drawing conclusions, we first observe what the text actually says.
What is happening in the story?
- A very large crowd follows Isa.
- The people are in a remote place and become hungry.
- Isa asks where bread can be found for the crowd.
- The disciples think feeding the crowd is impossible.
- A boy offers five loaves and two fish.
- Isa gives thanks and distributes the food.
- The entire crowd eats and is satisfied.
- Twelve baskets of leftovers remain.
Important details to notice
- The crowd is extremely large — about five thousand men.
- The available food is very small.
- Isa already knows what he will do before asking the question.
- The people eat until they are satisfied.
- More food remains afterward than existed at the start.
Interpretation second: — Is there something we can learn about Isa?
Now we ask: what might this sign reveal about Isa?
Compassion and provision
Isa sees the physical needs of the people and responds with compassion.
He provides food where there appeared to be none.
This sign shows that Isa cares for human need and has the power to provide beyond natural limits.
From physical bread to deeper meaning
Later in John 6, Isa explains that this miracle points to something greater than bread.
Just as the crowd needed food to live physically, people need something deeper to truly live.
Isa begins to speak about the “bread from heaven.”
A sign pointing beyond itself
The miracle feeds the crowd for one day.
But the sign raises a much larger question:
Could Isa himself be the true source of life that God provides?
The Bread of Life explanation
Later in the same chapter, Isa explains that this miracle was pointing to something deeper.
The crowd had eaten physical bread and wanted more food. But Isa begins to speak about a different kind of bread — the kind that gives life from Allah.
John 6:35
Then Isa declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
This raises a new question for the reader:
Was the miracle only about feeding a crowd for one day — or was Isa revealing that he himself is the true source of life?
Implication last: What might this mean for you?
You have now read the Scripture and considered what this sign might reveal about Isa.
Take a moment to reflect.
- What stands out to you most in this story?
- Why do you think Isa first asked the disciples where bread could be found?
- What might the miracle suggest about Isa’s ability to provide?
- Why do you think John records this miracle with the idea of “bread from heaven”?
- If Isa truly provides life, what might that mean for you?
Continuing the Journey
This was the fourth sign recorded by John.
Each sign reveals something deeper about Isa and invites us to consider who he really is.
