The First Sign of Isa

Recap: You already know that the Quran shows us that:

  • Isa was born of a virgin
  • Isa performed miracles
  • Isa was not killed
  • Isa was taken alive to Allah
  • Isa will return on Judgement Day

No other prophet in Islam is described this way.

In the Injil, John's Gospel records a series of carefully chosen signs. These are not just miracles to impress people. They are meant to reveal who Isa is, what kind of authority he has, and what response he calls for.

The first sign happens at a wedding in Cana. At first glance it may seem small compared with later miracles. Yet John deliberately begins here. Isa quietly provides what is lacking, removes shame from a family celebration, and starts to reveal his identity in a way that leads his disciples to believe in him.

This first sign invites us to slow down and ask: why did John begin here? Why abundance? Why a wedding? Why jars used for purification? And what does this first sign begin to show about Isa?  Read the Scripture below:

John 2:1-11

A wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Isa’s mother was there, and Isa (Jesus) and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

When the wine was gone, Isa’s mother said to him,

“They have no more wine.”

Isa replied,

“Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants,

“Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Isa said to the servants,

“Fill the jars with water.”

So they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them,

“Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,

“Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Isa did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed who he really was; and his disciples believed in him.

Observation first — What does the Scripture say?

Before we jump to conclusions, we first look carefully at what the text actually says.

What is happening in the story?
  • A wedding celebration is taking place in Cana.
  • Isa, his mother, and his disciples are attending.
  • The wine runs out — a major embarrassment for the host family.
  • Isa’s mother informs him of the problem.
  • Six large jars used for purification rituals are filled with water.
  • Isa turns the water into wine.
  • The master of the banquet declares it the best wine.
  • The disciples begin to believe in Isa.
Important details to notice
  • This miracle happens at a wedding celebration where wine had been served.
  • The water jars were used for Jewish purification rituals.
  • Isa performs the miracle quietly — only the servants know what happened.
  • This event is called the first “sign.”
Interpretation second: — Is there something we can learn about Isa?

Now we ask: What might this sign reveal about Isa?

What does this sign reveal about Isa?
  • He has authority over creation.
  • He can transform what is ordinary into something new.
  • He quietly provides what people need.
  • He removes shame and brings honour.
Why water jars for purification?

These jars were used in religious washing rituals. Instead of simply refilling them with water, Isa transforms the water into wine — symbolising that something new is beginning.

Many readers of the whole Tawrat and Injil see this as a sign that Isa brings a deeper cleansing and a new ʿAhd (عهد) — a promise from Allah.

Implication last: What might this mean for you?

You have now read the Scripture and explored what this sign reveals about Isa.

Take a moment to reflect personally. You may wish to write down your thoughts.

Consider questions like these:

  • What surprised you in this story?
  • What did you learn about Isa that you had not noticed before?
  • Why do you think John calls this a “sign”?
  • What might this reveal about who Isa really is?
  • If this is true, what difference could it make in how you respond to Isa?

Continuing the Journey

This was the first sign — the beginning of John’s Road.

Each sign reveals something deeper about Isa and invites us to decide who he really is.
